Mosaic Vessels

Vessels are glass on glass mosaic.  Vessels are water tight and can hold flowers or a votive candle.  Some vessels are provided with battery operated lights and can be used as accent lightling.

Great Blue Mosaic is a custom mosaic studio located in Portland, Maine.  Owned and operated by mosaic artist Gretchen Schaefer, Great Blue Mosaic offers hand crafted, one of a kind mosaic wallpieces, vessels and jewelry.  Work from stock can be viewed for purchase by appointment at the studio. Recent Custom Commissions

I welcome the opportunity to work with clients on custom mosaic projects.  The client has the chance to collaborate with me on every aspect of the project.  Documentary photos can be provided as the piece progresses.

Because mosaic is waterproof it is the perfect choice for wet areas like sink surrounds, back splashes and kitchen or bathroom wall insets.  I can work with your tiler and contractor to provide wall insets to seamlessly mesh with surrounding tile work.

An artist since childhood Gretchen has a wide background in fine craft work.  Studying metalsmithing at the University of Iowa, Gretchen supported herself as a fine weaver and jewelry maker while milking cows and canning vegetables.  Gretchen began to focus on mosaic in the late 1990's, traveling several times to northeast Italy to study Early Christian and Byzantine mosaic styles.  Gretchen currently gardens, plays music and makes mosaics full time in Portland, Maine.
